Bakst Leon and Studio


(born as Leon Samoilovich Rosenberg) was a Rusisan painter and a  scene and costume designer, a member of the Sergei Diaghilev circle and the Ballet Russe, for which he designed rich, colourful and exotic  sets and costumes.

Bakst was born in Grodno on May 10, 1866. He studied at the Imperial Academy of Art (1883-1887) under the tutorship of P.P. Chistyakov and K.B. Venig. He lived in Paris from 1893 to 1897, where he continued his education at the R. Julien Academy  and in private studios of l. Jerome and A. Edelfelt. After the mid-1890s he became a member of the circle of writers and artists formed by Sergei Diaghilev and Alexandre Benois, which later became the Mir Iskusstva (Art World) art movement. Bakst was an illustrator for the “Mir Iskusstva” magazine, as well as for the “Yearly issue of Imperial theatres” (1899-1902), «Art treasures of Russia» (1901-02), «Vesi» (1904-09) and «Golden Fleece» (1906) magazines. Bakst was a member of the Imperial Academy of Art from 1914.

Known as an outstanding theatre painter of modernity, Bakst brought significant influence to the formation of the «art-deco» style.

Leon Bakst was one of the most important designers for the Ballet Russe from 1909-1921. His sets and costumes brought him wide European recognition. He is most noted for the sets and costumes for Scheherazade (1910), Firebird (1910) and Le Spectre de la Rose (1911).

 Bakst participated in exhibitions of the Autumn Saloon in France and at the Brussels Royal Аrt Аcademy. His works are represented in the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, the Moscow Pushkin museum, the Bakhrushin Theatre Museum in Moscow, music and theatre museums in St. Petersburg, the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris, the Albert and Victoria Museum in London, the Ashmolian Museum in Oxford, the Metropolitan Museum in New York and many others.
