Leonid Shishkin Gallery,Moscow, is one of the first private commercial galleries in Russia, is a family business with a rich history. It was established in 1989 when Perestroika in the Soviet Union and further collapse of the Soviet Empire allowed Leonid Shishkin, the founder, at that time - successful journalist and art collector, to put his lifelong hobby onto a professional level. Under the name of Universal Art It started as a small business in a tiny showroom at the distant Moscow quarter where it was acting mostly as B2B supplying quality Russian art to the dealers and galleries from abroad. After the iron curtain has fallen the art from the Soviet era got into a great fashion and was in big demand in the West for more than a whole decade.
Soon the company made its first steps into a proper gallery business making both educational and commercial art shows of the XX century Russian art both in the country and abroad (Greece, Germany, Switzerland, Portugal, USA, Venezuela, Costa Rica) gradually increasing its clientele and supporters.
In the mid of 1990s the gallery was privileged to be included into the Government cultural projects abroad dedicated to the state visit of Russia’s vice presidents to the respective countries: Days of Russia in Venezuela (Caracas,1992) and Technologies from Russia (Washington, 1994).
By 2000 the Gallery gained a sound reputation in the art circles and moved into a premium location in the Central Moscow where under the name of Leonid Shishkin Gallery it pioneered in making monthly auctions of XIX and XX Russian art which proved to be extremely popular with both locals and expats. It also continued with the series of educational art projects most of which were highly rated in the press and acclaimed by critics. By 2004 the gallery had two new branches in Moscow and one in St. Petersburg.
Exhibition geography also expanded from the Urals (Ekaterinburg) in the East to the Netherlands in the West. A number of charity auctions have been organized in Moscow in collaboration with the International Women’s Club in support of children with cancer such as “Nastenka” and some others.
Its acclaimed collection of art has also been showcased at the Milano Internazionale Antiquariato as well as the Russian Art Fair in LondonIn 2009 the company moved into a newly refurbished iconic Ukaraina hotel located at one of the 8 famous Moscow skyscrapers that dominate the city skyline. Ukraina based auctions that featured both live and online bidding established a new trend in art business in Russia. Two major cultural projects of the decade organized by the gallery became “must” cultural events of their respective years (Eternal Return. Art of Nikolay Smirnov at the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg in 2010, and Alexander Gerasimov exhibition at the State Historical Museum in Moscow in 2016).
