The classic of Russian art, the master of a genre art. Konstantin Makovsky's brother. In the childhood he was engaged in painting under the direction of Vasily Tropinin. In 1861 he entered Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture founded by his father where Sergey Zarjanko was one of his tutors.
Till 1894 he lived in Moscow, and then in Petersburg. He was a member of Peredvizhniki association («Society for Traveling Art Exhibitions»).
Vladimir Makovsky's genre-pieces - axiomatic samples of art of "peredvizhniki". Its early, smoothly written, good-humoured small compositions are devoted to cares and simple pleasures of “the small person”. The artist has devoted many of his paintings to “new people”, life and struggle of revolutionaries.
Having made in 1896 trip to Volga, he has written a cycle of the national bottom’s images close to themes of young Maxim Gorkiy.
Successfully acted as the portraitist, the book and journal illustrator and the teacher (since 1882 he taught in Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, and then in Academy of Arts).
