Vasily Vikulov

Well-known  Russian impressionist artist, active between 1930s and 1970s. Throughout his career he was equally successfull in all artistuc genres from intimate landscape to large scale thematic picture. Graduated from Leningrad VKhITEIN (that was the name given to The State Academy of Fine Arts in 1920s-1930s) under the tutorship of prominent modernist K.Petrov-Vodkin and V.Savinsky. In the late 1920s was a member of AKhRR (Association of Artsits of Revolutionary Russia). Since 1935 - member of the Union of Soviet artists. Exhibited his works at  numerous exhibtions which included Annual shows of Leningrad artists works from 1951 to 1970, Some paintings by Vasily Vikulov are at the collection of the State Russian Museum  (Saint-Petersburg). 

Over three decades of his career Vikulov created the series of impressionist views of his beloved Leningrad. They represent a unique image of the great city on Neva-river in 1930s-1960s with its busy streets and squares often filled with crowds and traffic. For the today's audience they give a nostalgic image of the times that have passed with it's typical signes. A human presence in the landscape was essential for Vikulov as that was what made them live and lifelike. The series include: "The Demonstration on Uritsky Square" (1937), "Christmas Tree Fiest on Palace Square"(1939),  "Winter Palace" (1951), St.Isaac Cathedral Square" (1957) and others.
