In terms of its pithiness and terseness Romeo and Juliet calls to Smirnov’s early works. In all, there are five objects in front of us; a letter, a dagger, a vial of poison and two portraits of an Italian young man and a woman from the times of the Shakespearian play. In the deep red background of the precious antique Italian cloth, these objects bring forth a penetrating and somewhat sad image, making this picture one of the most emotional and touching works of the artist.
